Extracurricular Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Activity- a global and holistic perspective

Editors:
Dr Sarah Preedy, University of Plymouth
Dr Emily Beaumont, University of Gloucestershire

Background

This book aims to review the growth and development of enterprise and entrepreneurship extracurricular activities within Higher Education Institutions globally. It will consider the form these activities take, their appeal and role, their resourcing and challenges, alongside innovative and impactful practices in design and delivery.

This book will bring together multiple angles on extracurricular enterprise activities, including academic, practitioner and policy perspectives, plugging the gap in the literature for a holistic review of these activities that incorporates viewpoints from across the globe while providing practical suggestions for improving teaching and learning. Each chapter will contribute to the debate regarding the role and value of extracurricular enterprise activities and crucially provide actionable knowledge for educators, practitioners and influencers through inclusion of teaching notes showcasing the authors’ practical suggestions.

The book will be structured around four key areas. Part I will explore what extracurricular enterprise activities comprise of globally, where we are seeing growth, and who engages. Part II will examine the design, resourcing and institutional contexts that permit or dissuade extracurricular enterprise activities. Part III offers insight into the benefits and limitations of the activities in different contexts. The final part will review innovative practice and explores ways in which these activities can be further developed.

Whilst all relevant contributions will be assessed on merit, the editors would particularly seek chapters concerning:

  • What do extracurricular enterprise activities comprise of globally? And what should it comprise of in the future?
  • Where are we seeing growth in extracurricular enterprise activities and why?
  • Who engages in extracurricular enterprise activities and what motivates them to do so?
  • For whom do extracurricular enterprise activities have greatest/least appeal and why?
  • How are they distinct from enterprise/entrepreneurship education delivered in the curriculum? Are boundaries clear or blurred?
  • How well resourced and supported are these activities and how might they be more effectively supported in the future?
  • Where does, or where should, support for extracurricular enterprise activities sit within an institution. How can a more interdisciplinary approach be encouraged?
  • What role do extracurricular activities play within an entrepreneurship ecosystem?
  • What are the difficulties and challenges in designing and delivering extracurricular enterprise activities and how to mitigate them?
  • What innovative practices are taking place within the design and delivery of extracurricular enterprise activities?
